Penstemon heterophyllus 'Electric Blue' adds zing to the tiring autumn garden with it's bright gentian blue flowers. The colour is a great foil for all the yellow and russet shades that dominate as the season draws to a close. P. heterophyllus comes from the California foothills where it basks in the sun on shingle slopes. Grow it on a sunny well-drained bank in the north or under the eaves against a north-west wall in the south and it will perform well for you if starved and clipped back after flowering.
